Darwin Gustavson

Darwin Gustavson, 80, of Ocala, Fla., passed away on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, following a lengthy illness.

He was born July 6, 1937, in Jamestown, N.Y.

He is survived by his wife, Susanne of 26 years; son, John (Kim) Gustavson; daughter, Julieanne (Shawn) Flattery; two grandchildren; three stepchildren; and two sisters: Carolyn Johnson and Alice Wells.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Arthur and Signe Gustavson; six brothers: Eric, Einar, Harry, Roy, Bertil and Ralph Gustavson; two sisters: Marilyn Furman and Dorisann Rinaldo; and grandson, Johnathan Gustavson.

Darwin was a graduate of Jamestown High School, class of 1955, Fredonia State University with a major in music, secondary degree in education and master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music.

Darwin served in the U.S. Military Band in Fairbanks, Alaska, for 1 ½ years. He freelanced in New York City for 10 years in various music venues before returning to Western New York, where he played the French Horn with the Chautauqua Symphony, Erie Philharmonic, Jamestown Municipal Band and various other music venues. Darwin worked and retired from Fredonia College, where he worked in computer networking.

Darwin was a dedicated family man who was loved by everyone who came in contact with him. He was a talented craftsman who did all kinds of work and was helpful to others. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Memorial service will be held at the New Apostolic Church, 6005 Perry Highway Erie, PA 16509 on Saturday, July 7.

Friends can greet the family starting at 11:30 a.m., with the service at noon. Lunch will be provided after the service.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
