Dorothy Martin Mara
Dorothy Martin Mara, 87, passed peacefully into the hands of the Lord, on Sunday, June 3, 2018. She was born Oct. 31, 1930, in Frewsburg, N.Y., to John R. Martin and Helen Ruth Martin.
After moving to Erie in 1974, she began a long career in banking, retiring from PNC in 1995. Dorothy, a “professional” mother and grandmother, was devoted to her children and most especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, card playing and dancing, but caring for the children in her life was her spiritual gift. She never missed an important event or the opportunity to play. Friends and family alike benefitted from her exceptional cooking at years of family and holiday dinners.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Olive Vennard.
She will be greatly missed by her husband of 67 years, Gerald W. Mara; her son, Kent Mara of Millcreek; her daughter, Kathy Weidenboerner (Joseph) of Fairview; her grandchildren: the Rev. Lauren Scharf (Christopher) of Pittsburgh and Joseph Weidenboerner (Deirdre) of Philadelphia; and two great-grandchildren: Caleb and Madelyn Scharf.
The Mara family will be forever grateful to the caring nurses and aides of Unit J at Pleasant Ridge Manor in Fairview.
At Dorothy’s wishes, service and burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are under the care of Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Road, Erie, Pa. Dorothy will be laid to rest at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Millcreek.
