Donald C. Schrader Sr.

Donald C. Schrader Sr., 81, of Burton Road, Jamestown, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at UPMC Hamot Medical Center, Erie, Pa., surrounded by his family.

He was born April 12, 1937. in the town of Cold Springs, the son of the late Dorr and Pauline Whitmore Schrader.

Don was a proud veteran serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a skilled machinist mechanic for 43 years at Marlin Rockwell Corp, serving as union steward for local UAW 338 for many years and earning several awards for his work as well as traveling to Sweden for the company.

For many years, he was commanding officer of the Jamestown Young Marines, a program of the Marine Corps League. Under his command, they earned several awards. Don was active in the organization for Civil Defense in Chautauqua County. He was a life member of the Sons of the American Legion and past commander and chaplain of the Samuel Derby Squadron 556 Sons of the Legion in Frewsburg.

Don enjoyed dancing with the Chautauqua Squares in Celoron, was active in marriage encounter weekend workshops, the senior bowling league, and he made and donated many wooden items for the church and the legion.

He was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church serving as an usher, and as a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society and the Celtics. Don designed and made the sign that was used for the St. James Church 100 year celebration.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Deanna Torsell Schrader; three daughters: Wanda (Art) Volk of Jamestown, Tanya Dickinson of Erie, Pa., and Lorraine (Ernest) Arbogast of Manchester, Mich.; seven grandchildren: Donald C. Schrader III, Cayla Schrader, Amanda Dickinson, Daniel Dickinson, Audrey Arbogast, Henry (Lauren) Arbogast and Gloria Arbogast; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his kitty cat, Dora.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Donald C. Schrader Jr.; his sister, Irene Waite; and his brother, Edson Schrader.

Everyone is invited to a Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Don’s life at 10 a.m. Friday in St James Catholic Church. The Rev. Darrell Duffy, pastor will be celebrant. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Pine Hill Cemetery, Falconer, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Road, Jamestown, NY 14701, or to a charity of one’s choice.
