Herman E. Leonard

Herman E. Leonard, 97, formerly of Peck Settlement Road, Jamestown, passed away Monday (Nov. 13, 2017) in the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born June 8, 1920, in Grand Valley, Pa., the son of the late Guy Ellwood and Ruth Maude Rupp Leonard.

Herman attended Cassadaga Valley High School for several years and was a graduate of Barker Central High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served in the 436th Troop Carrier Group as Technical Sgt. from 1942 to 1945. After WWII, he moved to the Jamestown area, working in the construction industry for more than 30 years. He worked as a carpenter and foreman with G. L. Olson Inc., Barnes Construction and several other local builders.

He was a lifelong member of the Stillwater United Methodist Church. He served as a trustee for many years, and helped plan and complete many construction projects on the church and parsonage. Herman was also a member of the Samuel Derby Post 558, American Legion and Local Carpenters Union.

In retirement, Herman enjoyed woodworking, gardening, assembling jigsaw puzzles and playing pinochle. He enjoyed playing basketball and baseball as a youth and watching his children and grandchildren participate in a variety of sporting activities. He was a Detroit Tigers fan and also rooted for the Cleveland Browns before becoming a fan of the Dallas Cowboys for many years.

Surviving are his wife, Delores M. Knott Leonard, whom he married May 1, 1948, in Jamestown; four children: Dr. Gregory (Marsha Feltz) Leonard of Jamestown, Martin (Dr. Lorie) Leonard of East Amherst, Cindy (Kurt) Zindler of Falconer, and Ronald (Marijane) Leonard of North Canton, Ohio; 10 grandchildren: Courtney (Matt) Snyder of Tybee Island, Ga., Dr. Kimberly (Philip) Chiaponne of Scituate, R.I. , Lindsey Leonard of Buffalo, Kristen Leonard of New York City, Alicia (Shawn) Laska of Kiantone, Nicole Kachermeyer of Falconer, Anna Leonard and Julia Leonard both of North Canton, Ohio, Ryan Feltz of Purling, N.Y., and Jason (Bethany) Feltz of Cheektowaga; 10 great-grandchildren: Katie and Alex Chiaponne, Kelson and Taran Laska, Virginia and William Kachermeyer, Kaela and Zoe Feltz, Wyatt and Eli Feltz.

He was preceded in death by four sisters: Winifred Leonard, Minnie Denea, Genevieve Wiser, and Evelyn Mekus; three brothers: Donald, Howard and Alden Leonard.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Falconer Funeral Home. The Rev. Kenneth Hodgins will officiate. Inurnment will be in Allen Cemetery at a later date.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, and one hour prior to the funeral service Saturday at the funeral home.
