Herbert P. Gustafson

Herbert P. Gustafson, 88, of Pittsfield, passed away Saturday Sept. 2, 2017, at his residence surrounded by his family.

He was born June 3, 1929, in Pittsfield, Pa., a son to the late Urno and Frances Ahlquist Gustafson. Herb was a 1948 graduate of Youngsville High School and then went on to serve in the US Army during the Korean War. He worked at the National Forge for 35 years, and also owned and operated Gustafson Excavating and Septic Service. Herb enjoyed working on trucks and equipment, going to the local race tracks and attending tractor and truck shows.

He is survived by his two sons: Jeffrey (Debbie) Gustafson of Irvine, and Michael (Helen) Gustafson of Russell; a grandson, Jason Gustafson; his brothers: Howard Gustafson of Pittsfield, Lawrence (Jackie) Gustafson of Irvine and Butch Gustafson of Youngsville; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Edith Nystrom Gustafson, whom he married March 5, 1960; a sister, Ina Walters; and his brothers: Urno “Lefty,” John and Richard Gustafson.

Friends and family will be received on Friday from 3-6 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Youngsville. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Berea Lutheran Church in Pittsfield with the Rev. Nancy Schwanke, officiating. Burial will be in the Berea Cemetery.
