ELLERY — Charges are pending after a Chautauqua County Jail inmate escaped custody Monday while on a work detail at the county landfill.

The inmate, whose identity was not released by the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, was arrested in the town of Gerry following an hourlong manhunt.

In a news release, the Sheriff’s Office said the escape occurred around 11:45 a.m. at the town of Ellery landfill. The inmate — who Sheriff James Quattrone described as a non-violent offender — was one of many involved in the work detail.

K-9 units from several agencies took part in the search, which began near the landfill and continued east toward Route 380 in Gerry.

“Several law enforcement agencies responded to the area of where the escape occurred,” the Sheriff’s Office said in its news release. “Through coordinated efforts, the inmate was able to be quickly located and placed back into custody.”

The inmate, who escaped with temperatures near 15 degrees, was not injured during the escape attempt.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the incident remains under investigation. More information will be released “as the investigation progresses,” the Sheriff’s Office announced.

Agencies that assisted Monday include the New York State Police, Jamestown Police Department, Lakewood-Busti Police Department, Gerry Fire Department and Chautauqua County EMS.
