A local business owner is facing tax fraud and a host of other charges after allegedly engaging in illegal business practices from 2012 to 2015.
On Tuesday, Patrick Swanson, Chautauqua County district attorney, announced that R. Kenneth Asel, owner of City Garage of Jamestown — doing business as Ken Asel R.V’s in Gerry — was handed a 20-count indictment by a Chautauqua County Grand Jury.
The charges include four counts of third-degree grand larceny, one count of second-degree forgery, two counts of criminal tax fraud and 13 counts of offering a false instrument for filing.
The allegations surround Asel’s business practices at Ken Asel R.V.’s between March 2012 through August 2015. The allegations include improper sales procedures, improper remittance of taxes to New York state and improper filing of tax returns.
Asel was arrested on a County Court Warrant and arraigned Monday in front of Judge Stephen Cass. Bail was set at $5,000 cash/bond or $10,000 property bond.
Swanson said the fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
Asel could not be reached Tuesday to comment on the charges.
