Just over a year after shovels first hit the dirt, the Riverwalk Community Skate Park in Jamestown is taking shape.

Much of the concrete has been poured in two of the three sections that will make up the site, located at 117 Fairmount Ave. and near McCrea Point Park. Portions of the third section were being worked on last week.

“It’s looking great,” said Trevor Staples, project manager. Staples recently shared photographs, include some using a drone, to highlight the progress being made. “It’s coming right along,” he said.

Staples was among a handful of officials who took part in a groundbreaking ceremony in May 2021. The park is situated near the former Jamestown Trolley building.

Noted for its location next to the Chadakoin River and as part of the Greater Jamestown Riverwalk, the project has been funded through a grant from the Skatepark Project, formerly known as the Tony Hawk Foundation, and the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation.

No opening date for the local skate park has been announced.

“It’s coming along great,” said Crystal Surdyk, the city’s director of development. “There is still a bit to do, and we’ve had some weather-related delays, but we anticipate the skate park portion to be completed in late July or early August.”

Surdyk said once the skate park is set, crews will begin working on landscaping. “We’re working through final details but are thrilled with the progress,” she said.

She added, ‘We are also looking at future evolution of the Riverwalk and development of that entire waterfront and linear park. It will be a work in progress but the skate park is certainly the first piece that is the catalyst for a lot of exciting development in that area.”

Plans to bring a skate park to Jamestown were first brought up in January 2019 after the city announced it had received a $250,000 matching grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation. For about a year, the local skateboardig community held fundraisers for the matching grant, with the city also contributing a significant amount of funding to reach the $250,000.
