Two officers with the Jamestown Police Department cited as heroes for acts this year will serve as grand marshalls during this weekend’s holiday parade.

The two — officers Mark Conklin and Jakki Martin-Ahlbin — were selected for their “heroism, courage and dedication” and deemed to be perfect to lead this year’s parade, said Patrick Smeraldo, independent service coordinator with Chautauqua Connections Inc.

Martin-Ahlbin was credited with helping to save the life of an 11-day-old child reported unresponsive and not breathing on Sept. 19. The Jamestown Police Department, in a recent message posted to Facebook, said the officer made entry into a residence, located the newborn and began performing CPR until members of the Jamestown Fire Department arrived.

“There is no doubt that (officer) Martin-Ahlbin’s actions were live-saving,” the department said. “Her actions not only reflect positively on the Jamestown Police Department, but also speak volumes on her personal character and dedication to service.”

Conklin helped a family escape a house fire July 19 on William Street in Jamestown.

“He has truly gone above and beyond as a city employee and a police officer,” Mayor Eddie Sundquist said during a meeting of the Jamestown City Council in which a special resolution was passed and proclamation read.

The rescue was captured on Conklin’s body camera that was later released by JPD.

“After watching the video of this incident and speaking to others involved, I can say that the actions of officer Conklin were, to say the least, one of the most outstanding examples of bravery, heroism and exemplary service I have seen,” said Police Chief Timothy Jackson. “We, the Jamestown Police Department, are honored to have officers such as Mark Conklin working in the Jamestown Police Department.”

The Jamestown Holiday Parade will take place Saturday, Dec. 4; events this year include a 1-mile adults and children fun run, musical entertainment, a traditional tree lighting ceremony with Sundquist, and a fireworks display above the Spring Street parking ramp.

The city of Jamestown and Collaborative Children’s Solutions are organzing the events.
