County Surpasses 500 Active COVID Cases

Hospitalizations continue to increase as Chautauqua County announced 116 new cases of the coronavirus on Thursday.

As of Wednesday, the county had 534 active cases of COVID-19 and 1,888 remain under quarantine orders from the Department of Health. Thursday’s numbers put the county at 3,681 confirmed cases of the virus since March.

Hospitalizations, meanwhile, increased by three to 48.

Thirty-two new cases were reported in Dunkirk and 30 new cases were reported in Jamestown. Fredonia also has 11 new cases.

Among the over 500 active cases, Jamestown has 145, Dunkirk has 105 and Fredonia has 45.

Smaller villages like Lakewood and Westfield also have 19 and 15 active cases, respectively.

Five new cases were also reported in Frewsburg, the site of a cluster of cases at The Magnolia, a Tanglewood Group-owned facility. Mayville, once the site of an outbreak at the county jail, now is down to six active cases.

Neighboring Cattaraugus County announced two more resident deaths on Wednesday in addition to 80 new cases. There are now 497 active cases in the county. There are also 935 quarantined travelers and 103 quarantined contacts.

Over 40 Warren County residents died from COVID-related causes in December.

After starting the month with only one COVID-related death, there were 25 more reported by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and 41 according to the Warren County coroner.

The surge that brought more than 1,100 new cases to the county in a month seems to have swung back down and the county ended 2020 on a positive note in terms of new cases. The daily total of 14 was the lowest in two weeks. There were 12 new cases on Dec. 18. Between those dates, the county set its record for a single day with 80 on Dec. 21.

The surge brought double-digit totals of new cases every day from Nov. 24 to the end of the year. The 1,171 new cases in December breaks down to almost 38 new cases every day.

The number of new cases in December was almost six times higher than the previous high – 196 in November.

As of Thursday, the county’s running total was 1,474, with 1,219 confirmed cases and 255 probables.

There had been 333 cases in the county as of Dec. 2. The state considers positive cases that do not result in deaths to be recovered after 30 days. The county ended the year with 1,141 cases at 30 days or less.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health did not add any new COVID-related deaths to the data on Thursday. That total remained at 26. That number is more than a week behind Warren County Coroner Melissa Zydonik’s. On Wednesday, Zydonik reported 42 COVID-related deaths, with 14 since Christmas Eve.

While the data indicated one more COVID-positive patient at Warren General Hospital, the patients are apparently in less serious circumstances. According to the department’s report, there were 23 patients, two of them using ventilators, and none in intensive care. Wednesday’s report showed 22 patients, two of them on ventilators, and five in ICU.

The county’s case rate stood at 3,731.8 per 100,000 population on Thursday.

Sullivan County had the lowest rate in the state at 2,404.9 and the only rate of less than 2,500 per 100,000. Mifflin County had the highest rate at 7,394.7 per 100,000.

The department announced that there will not be a new report on Friday due to the holiday.
