County Nears 6K Total COVID Cases

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Chautauqua County inched closer to 6,000 with 84 reported Wednesday.

To date, 5,875 county residents were found to have the virus, with 489 cases currently considered active.

The Chautauqua County Department of Health also recorded its 51st virus-related death, which appears to be a person between the ages of 70 and 79. Of the deaths noted thus far during the pandemic, four have included people between the ages of 40 and 49; three between 50 and 59; five between 60 and 69; 14 between 70 and 79; 21 between 80 and 89; and four over the age of 90.

The information, collected Tuesday, also indicates that seven fewer people with COVID were in the hospital, currently at 42; the number of people in quarantine also dropped, from 1,952 on Tuesday to 1,924 on Wednesday.

Of the 84 new cases, 18 involve people living in the Dunkirk zip code, 10 in Fredonia, 17 in Jamestown, 11 in Bemus Point and six in Westfield. Several municipalities also reported a handful of new COVID cases.

Meanwhile, the county has not updated the number of COVID vaccinations — either first or second doses — administered since Jan. 13. At that time, 3,622 first doses had been given out, with 340 people receiving their second dose.

Confirmed cases of COVID also have increased at two Heritage facilities in the county. As of Wednesday, 27 staff and 47 residents at Heritage Green in Greenhurst have tested positive, while seven staff and 27 residents at Heritage Village in Gerry have tested positive.

Two Heritage Green residents who were recently found to have the virus died at the facility in the last week.

Only one employee at The Park in Jamestown, another Heritage nursing facility, has been confirmed to have COVID. No resident currently has the virus.

In Cattaraugus County, 28 new COVID cases were announced Tuesday evening. There are currently 437 active cases and 45 people with the virus in the hospital.

To date there have been 3,378 total confirmed cases and 68 deaths connected to COVID in Cattaraugus.

There also were 17 new cases of COVID-19 in Warren County and two more deaths. The totals as of Wednesday’s report from the Pennsylvania Department of Health included 1,889 cases and 75 deaths.

The new cases include 10 confirmed and seven probables.

At Warren General Hospital, there were 30 COVID-positive patients, none in intensive care, and none on ventilators. The total number of patients is up three from Tuesday and up seven compared to Monday.
