Fireworks Display Planned For Mayville Park

This year’s Fourth of July celebration in Mayville may not include a festival or parade due to COVID-19 concerns, but local residents should still expect to have a blast.

Chautauqua County July 4th, a committee that oversees the annual Independence Day celebration in the village, announced Tuesday that a fireworks display will take place at Lakeside Park at 10 p.m.

“We just felt with everything else that people have lost due to COVID-19 that it was important to have some sense of normalcy to celebrate our nation’s independence,” said Rita Jacobson, a 34-year member of the committee and Mayville resident, later adding, “it really broke our hearts to cancel the parade. We wanted to establish this little bit of light at the end of the tunnel.”

“We wanted to give people this little bit of enjoyment.”

Due to the pandemic, the committee announced earlier this month that the annual Fourth of July parade — a staple in the village utilized by fire departments to show off equipment and local officials to meet constituents — had been canceled like similar events across the county. Members of the nonprofit noted at the time that they hoped the fireworks display could be salvaged.

That appears to be the case.

Jacobson said the display was moved from its normal location to the park, where organizers could limit access to the public and allow the fireworks to be seen for those on and around Chautauqua Lake. She said the park will be closed to visitors for the duration of the event out of an abundance of caution.

“People should be able to watch from all around that part of the lake,” she said, noting the support the committee has received from the village of Mayville and town of Chautauqua.

Skylighters of Orchard Park will put on the fireworks show, which costs about $20,000.

Jacobson reminded area residents who plan to watch to be safe. “We want people to be responsible and to be social distancing,” she said.

The Fourth of July festival helps fund the committee, so the lack of events this year is expected to put a dent in fundraising efforts. Those who would like to donate can send a check to the Chautauqua County July 4th Committee at PO Box 229, Mayville, NY 14757.
