Y Plan Expected

Nonprofit To Announce Details Of New Location

The Jamestown Area YMCA will be making an announcement during the next month about its future location.

Mark Eckendorf, Jamestown Area YMCA CEO, told The Post-Journal he couldn’t provide any additional information at this time, but said the announcement should be coming within the next month.

“Discussions are ongoing right now. Things aren’t finalized,” he said.

The Post-Journal had contacted Eckendorf about an update of the Jamestown Area YMCA’s search for a possible new location. Last April, he said that YMCA officials had been looking at properties along the Foote Avenue medical corridor as a possible new location, but nothing had been finalized.

Eckendorf said YMCA officials are looking into possibly moving from their Fourth Street location because at some point the two area YMCAs, which also includes the Lakewood YMCA, have to possibly consolidate operations.

Eckendorf said the search for a possible new location is a preliminary step to consolidation, with nothing being “concrete” at the time.

Eckendorf also announced in February 2019 that he would be retiring from the YMCA in June 2019. However, he said the Jamestown Area YMCA Board of Directors asked Eckendorf to continue as CEO until the possible move of the Jamestown Y is finalized.

“They wanted to keep things steady and stabilized as we move toward a new downtown facility,” Eckendorf said about staying on as CEO. “That is why I’m still here. My dream is to see that change.”

Eckendorf said there isn’t a new date set for his retirement. However, he plans to continue heading Y operations “as we move through this phase.”

“At that point, I will retire and I will give the board plenty of notice,” he said.
