The impact of the newly-named Jamestown Tarp Skunks baseball franchise is already spreading far from the confines of Russell Diethrick Park.

Just a few days removed from an unveiling ceremony on Wednesday, areas businesses are already joining on to help support the city’s newest Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League team.

Before the franchise announced its name to the public, general manager Frank Fanning was already working with The Jock Shop on a variety of Tarp Skunks gear.

Thus far, the reception has been great.

“We’ve been working with Frank Fanning from the club for probably about a month prior,” said Jock Shop co-owner Randy Marsh. “He was proactive and he ordered a bunch of stuff ahead that we were able to produce and get it in here ahead of time. We have an online store going with them right now that is pretty much national. We had an order from Texas come in for $300.”

New fans of the team will see a large display of all different types of apparel just through the entrance to the store.

“As it builds and people start liking the logo, I think everything has turned out really good. (Customers are) very supportive. Everybody has been liking the logo. As long as word gets out that we have it we’ll keep going.”

What goes better with a new Tarp Skunks shirt than a specialty Tarp Skunks cookie.

Chad Ecklof of Ecklof Bakery made a visit to Diethrick Park last Thursday to hand-deliver one of the first batches of “skunk stripe cookies.”

A variation on the classic pink stripe cookies, this version features a dark outer body with a white stripe to mirror the profile of a skunk.

“The whole idea of the skunk thing, we just thought we would help try and generate some buzz about it,” Ecklof said.

With one batch in the books, Ecklof and his bakers are going to do some experimenting to find out what cookie works best. Right now the debate is whether or not to keep the flavor the same as a regular pink stripe cookie or change things up to a cookies-and-cream and chocolate flavor.

“Monday morning Frank will stop in and he and I will talk about how we can get the cookies out there with the skunk logo,” Ecklof said.

Ecklof plans to offer Fanning a few different types of new cookies to try, and also expects to offer bakery customers samples as they go through the process to get feedback on the new “skunk stripe cookies” or “skunk tails.”

“Once we come up with a finished product and we figure out how the bakery and the Skunks can work together, I’m going to invite them down for an unveiling,” Ecklof said.

After they settle on a recipe for the cookies, Ecklof and the team can start to talk about the branding relationship and how to bring the finished products into Diethrick Park.

But what if you get thirsty after eating your new Tarp Skunks cookie?

Forte restaurant on East Third Street has you covered.

Bartender Nick Dean announced via Facebook on Thursday a new offering: the Skunk Butt cocktail, which features an appropriately-colored Oreo garnish.
