Man Follows Student, JPD Investigating Situation

Jamestown police said Thursday it is investigating a “suspicious situation” that took place as a young child walked to school.

The incident took place in the morning on Cole Avenue at East Virginia Boulevard, near the bandshell, and reportedly involved a tall, white male in his 30s.

“The male reportedly followed and ran after the child as the child was walking along Cole Avenue. The male reportedly stopped pursuing the youth and entered a wooded area near the band shell.”

The male was further described as having dark hair and was wearing dark clothing with a long-sleeve shirt with a camo design on its back.

Police are working closely with the Jamestown Public Schools District on the matter.

“We are currently working on this with our patrol officers, school resource officers and investigators,” Capt. Robert Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department said. “We are examining video from that area and are continuing to work closely with the Jamestown Public Schools. Patrol zone cars will be patrolling the school zones as they do each school day. Anyone who may see a subject matching the description is asked to contact the JPD immediately.”

The school district issued the following statement Thursday afternoon:

“As our priority is to keep parents informed, this message is to notify you that a female student has reported a suspicious male near the Allen Park band shell. The student reported this morning that the man followed her and his behavior made her uneasy which caused her to inform her principal. The Jamestown Police Department has been informed, is looking into the matter further and will release additional information.

“As student safety is our number one priority, we ask that you talk with your children about the importance of not talking to strangers, or if any stranger approaches them, to report it immediately to an adult as the student did this morning. We need to all work together as a community to help keep our children safe.”
