Planning Board Finalizes Priority List Of Capital Projects

The two-month process to finalize a list of future capital projects by priority has been completed by the Chautauqua County Planning Board.

Don McCord, county Planning and Community Development Division director, said the board first met during an all-day meeting May 7 to hear about each proposed project by county government officials. Following this initial meeting, the board met a couple more times to discuss the list before it was finalized.

McCord said the list will be given to George Borrello, county executive, to determine the projects that will possibly be included in the 2020 county budget.

“The county executive, when preparing the budget, can follow the recommendations or he can vary from it,” McCord said.

The board doesn’t just look at next year, but also into future years when determining the priority of each project on the list, McCord said.

Melissa Keller, county Planning and Community Development Division planning technician, said county airport projects are not included in the prioritized list because they mostly receive federal and state funding.

Also, enterprise projects that are funded by user fees are not part of the prioritized list.

No. 1 on the list are highway and bridge projects. The next project on the list is to replace a Chautauqua Area Regional Transit System bus. Project three is Luensman Overview Park in Brocton restroom.

There are 13 projects — of 43 on the list — for Jamestown Community College. Some of these projects include roofs, IT equipment and security, exterior repairs, signage and a soccer field.
