Suspicious Male Approaches JPS Student

Jamestown police are investigating a suspicious situation involving a student walking to school near Burr Place and Price Street Friday.

At about 9 a.m. police and the Jamestown Public Schools District reported a man approaching a 12-year-old child as the child was walking to school. The man allegedly drove up alongside the child, offered the child a ride to school and then allegedly asked for the child’s phone number. The child did not communicate with the man, went directly to Washington Middle School and reported the incident.

The vehicle is described as a red pick-up truck with chrome wheels. The man is described as being a black male with a high ponytail in his hair.

Anyone with information on the vehicle or the man is asked to call the Jamestown Police Department at 483-7537 or leave an anonymous tip at 483-TIPS or the Tips 411 App. All calls and tips are kept confidential.

“As student safety is our number one priority, we ask that you talk with your children about the importance of not talking to strangers, or if any stranger approaches them, to report it immediately to an adult as the Washington student did this morning. We need to all work together as a community to help keep our children safe,” the school district said in a statement posted on its website.

School officials said the district includes awareness of strangers education in its formal curriculum. Students in Kindergarten through 12th grade are taught the Michigan Model for Health, a skill-based health education guide, in the district’s health curriculum that includes units focused on safety awareness.

Additionally, the district informally reinforces awareness with strangers through assemblies, in the classroom and community presentations. These presentations are typically held at the middle and elementary school level.
