More boating activities will be coming to McCrea Point Park this summer.

On Monday, the Jamestown City Council discussed the installation of a kayak launch at McCrea Point Park. Jeff Lehman, city public works director, said it will be a handicapped accessible launch.

Vince DeJoy, city development director, said funding for the kayak launch installation is from the state Downtown Revitalization Initiative program. As part of the $10 million in funding city officials received from the state, $325,000 is going to fund the “Enhance Riverwalk Experience.” The project will mainly consist of implementing the Greater Jamestown Riverwalk illumination plan to decoratively light waterfront features. However, some of the funding will also go toward installing a kayak launch along the Chadakoin River and to complete a floating debris collection system around the Warner Dam.

DeJoy said city officials looked at trying to install the kayak launch behind Comedy Center Park near the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities, but that was not feasible.

Two proposals were received for the installation of the kayak launch. DeJoy said the lowest bid was for $21,878 by Great Lakes EZ-Dock of Grand Island. He said the business is a minority-and-women-owned business, which 30 percent of the project costs is supposed to benefit according to the guidelines of the DRI program.

DeJoy added that the kayak launch is scheduled to be installed in July.

In other business, the council discussed the front roof repair project for the Allen Park Ice Arena. Lehman said the project just focuses on the front sections of the facility, not the entire structure. He said two bids were received, with NuWood Creations of Ashville being the lowest at $65,400. Tom Nelson, Ward 6 councilman, said the bid was less expensive by $11,000.

Lehman said the funding will come from the 2015 bond project, of which Sam Teresi, Jamestown mayor, said there was a line item for roof improvements of city-owned facilities.
