Winter Road Woes

Icy Conditions Wreak Havoc For Area Motorists

A wintry mix of snow and ice made for woeful driving conditions Tuesday — most notably for tractor-trailer drivers, many of whom found themselves stuck in ditches along Interstate 86.

The New York State Police reported several vehicles off the road due to slick roads. That was none more evident than on the Southern Tier Expressway, where at one point six semi trucks were simultaneously either stuck in a ditch or had crashed.

On Interstate 90, near Westfield, firefighters were called to two rollover crashes involving tractor-trailers within a half-mile of each other in the westbound lane.

The bulk of the mishaps occurred near the border of Pennsylvania, which was hit hardest with the winter weather.

“Many accidents are caused by driving too fast for the road conditions,” Capt. Eric Balon of the New York State Police told The Post-Journal. “We always recommend that people use extra caution while driving.”

“But with winter driving, it is even more important,” he said. “Conditions change rapidly here in Western New York, and even if the weather and roads appear clear when you start out, they can get bad. Make sure that you leave yourself extra time to get to your destination.”

Balon said no serious injuries were reported in any of the early crashes.

Elsewhere, a Clymer woman was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the car she was driving struck a home. The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said 20-year-old Madison Styers was transported to UPMC Chautauqua after the crash shortly before noon at the intersection of Panama-Stedman and Baker roads. An investigation found that Styers was southbound on Panama-Stedman Road when she lost control and struck a nearby property. No one was home at the time of the crash, the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

Styers was issued traffic citations for speed not reasonable and prudent and unsafe tires.

In Coldspring, a small rental cargo van struck a utility pole on Route 394. No injuries were reported.

A winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service in Buffalo expired late Tuesday.
