High winds played a major role in containing a fire on Willard Street Friday.

The Jamestown Fire Department along with mutual assistance from Lakewood and Falconer Volunteer Fire Departments, were called to a house fire at 281 Willard St. at approximately 2:22 p.m. The fire was reported after a passing motorist observed the blaze and a female occupant exit the house. The motorist then called 911. Battalion Chief Andrew Finson said the sole occupant of the house was injured.

Finson also said that the there were an undetermined amount of cats in the home. “We had heavy fire when we got here, the fire was blowing out the front window and on the second floor and a the side door (of the home),” Finson said. “We went defensive from the beginning. We were going to go interior but decided not to because the fire was heavy and with the wind it was not worth going inside.” Fifteen off-duty firefighters from Jamestown were called into assist along with mutual aid from Lakewood and Falconer. Finson said an investigation is continuing.
