The body of a missing Falconer man was recovered from Chautauqua Lake on Monday, bringing to close a wide-scale search involving numerous fire and police departments.

Divers found Timothy D. Yocum, 47, around 2:50 p.m., two days after he was first reported missing after going for a swim. Dozens of area first responders — including members of the county Water Emergency Team and Sheriff’s Office Marine Division — helped scour the lake.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office headed the search, but Undersheriff Charles Holder noted the amount of resources pooled from surrounding police and fire agencies that helped locate Yocum. He said a unified command was established Saturday afternoon at the Chautauqua County Yacht Club in Lakewood before a grid search was undertaken.

“Whenever we have one of these incidents the amount of resources and coordination from all the agencies is astounding,” Holder told The Post-Journal. “Everyone comes together. We pulled resources as far away as Pennsylvania.”

“We get everyone involved in the decision-making,” he said. “Everyone gets along and works toward the main goal, and that is closure for the family.”

Yocum was identified about two and a half hours after his body was recovered Monday near Greenhurst. Holder said the incident was being treated as an accidental drowning.

“With boaters at this time of the year we want to make sure they have a life vest with them or a flotation device if they become tired while in the water,” Holder said.

Among the agencies that assisted in the search were the New York State Police, Lakewood-Busti Police, Starflight helicopter and firefighters from Lakewood, Busti, Celoron, Ashville, Dewittville, Bemus Point and Glade Township in Pennsylvania.
