MAYVILLE — Local residents are going to pay more for their village taxes as well as higher fees for the cemetery.

During the Mayville Village Board meeting, the board adopted its 2023-24 budget. The spending plan is $2,066,900. The levy, the amount raised by taxes, is $813,575 and has a tax rate of $6.57 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

The 2022-23 budget is $2,040,334 with a levy of $797,463 and a tax rate of $6.40 per $1,000 assessed valuation.

No comments were made during a public hearing before the vote. The village board unanimously approved the 16-cent per $1,000 increase.

Water rates are going up 50 cents per 1,000 gallons used. That increase was adopted last year, when the board agreed to raise rates 50 cents a year for three years.

In a separate resolution village officials hiked fees at the Mayville Cemetery. Some increases were quite significant, after keeping the rates flat for several years.

In the new fee schedule, one lot will cost $800. It had been $700 per lot, which was set in 2011.

Grave opening or closing on a weekday will cost $700. It had been $460. Opening or closing on a Saturday will cost $1,050. It used to cost $660. Opening or closing on a Sunday or holiday will cost $2,100. The previous rate schedule did not list Sundays or holidays. The previous rates were set in June, 2005.

The new rates include fees for cremation, which wasn’t listed in the old cemetery rates. It will cost $350 on a weekday, $525 for a Saturday and $1,050 for a Sunday or a holiday.

Foundations were drastically changed as well. Foundation rates, which were set in April 1988, charged a minimum of $50. For over 24 inches by 12 inches, there was an additional $15 per cubic foot. The new rates charge $275 for foundations. For over 24 inches by 48 inches, with a maximum of up to 24 inches by 72 inches, it will cost $425.

The new rates go into effect June 1.
