MAYVILLE — The Mayville Village Board will soon look quite different.

In November, residents elected current Trustee Rick Syper to as mayor, taking over for Ken Shearer who chose not to run for re-election.

Shearer was mayor for one term and was a one-term trustee before that. During his tenure, the village had Chautauqua Pops come and go. They also had a major water crisis, where perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) was discovered in three of Mayville’s water wells. The village put in a new well and also built a new treatment plant.

To this day, Mayville is still operating under a state of emergency order for its water. Village leaders have yet to finalize a plan to replace its wells that are infected.

In November, along with a new mayor, two new trustees were elected — Mark Perry and Bill Ward. Incumbent Trustee Eagle Harrington lost by eight votes, while Trustee Jim Warner, who was appointed in November 2021 following the resignation of H. Tim Jacobson, chose not to run for office.

During December’s village board meeting officials certified the November results. It was also announced that Joe Calimeri was resigning as village attorney.

Syper, meanwhile, has called for a special meeting on Jan. 5 at 5 p.m. in the Carlson Community Center for the new village board members to talk. He has not said who he plans to appoint for trustee or if he has any specific candidates to nominate as village attorney.
