Pedal For Polio Event To Take Place On Saturday

The Noon Rotary Club of Jamestown, Greater Jamestown AM Rotary, and the Falconer Rotary Club will once again participate in the third annual Pedal for Polio event on Saturday.

The local bike ride starts at McCrea Point on the Chadakoin River in Jamestown. The bike route will follow 27 miles through Celoron, Lakewood and Ashville over mostly flat terrain.

The Pedal for Polio Challenge was initiated by Past Rotary District 7090 Governor Frank Adamson. The local Pedal for Polio ride has a goal of $2,000 in donations. The “Best of Friends” District 7090 of Rotarians and community members pedal for polio eradication with the assistance of sponsorships and donations. Rotary International is a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative and has reduced polio cases by 99.9% since its first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. World Polio Day is Oct. 24.

More than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries have been vaccinated due to the efforts of local and worldwide Rotary Clubs. At the present time, Rotary has contributed more than $1.8 billion toward eradicating Polio. Rotarians will continue to fight against polio until there are no new cases diagnosed throughout the entire world.

Rotary is a service organization whose purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. The AM Rotary meets at 7:30 a.m. at Venue 31 the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. The noon Rotary meets at 11:45 a.m. Mondays at the Doubletree Hotel on Fourth Street. The Falconer Rotary Club meets the first and third Thursday of each month at 7 a.m. at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History. Visitors are welcome.
