Lakewood OKs Application Prep For Lake Treatment

LAKEWOOD — Preparation of an application to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for the treatment of the Lakewood shoreline could soon be underway.

The Lakewood Village Board this week approved a resolution to authorize SOLitude Lake Management to prepare and submit an herbicide permit application on behalf of Lakewood for this year.

Potential treatment would include the use of Aquathol k and ProcellaCor to designated portions of Chautauqua Lake in coordination with the town of Busti and authorize the application to areas of the Lakewood shorelines by SOLitude Lake Management if the permit is approved.

“This is what we do annually to get into the system to get the approval,” Lakewood Mayor Randy Holcomb said.

Village board members Ellen Barnes and Rich Fischer questioned whether two resolutions for each herbicide were made last year. Holcomb clarified that the board approved the ability of the management company to file the application on behalf of the board and a second measure was passed to allow the village to retain the authority to apply ProcellaCor to the lake.

It was suggested that the resolution be made into two separate resolutions. However, Holcomb said they were asked by SOLitude to make it one resolution.

Village attorney John Lamancuso explained that the resolution allowed for both the preparation and submission of the application, as well as the application of herbicides to the lake and shoreline.

“In other words, I’m not sure you would have to do anything else and SOLitude, if they get the permit, could go and do the application so they’re trying to streamline,” he said.

“They don’t want us to have to wait and do another resolution down the road,” Barnes replied.

The board approved the motion unanimously.

In other news, a public hearing on the tentative budget will be held at 6:45 p.m. on Monday, April 11.
