Frewsburg School Board Awaits Finalized State Budget

FREWSBURG — Like many school districts across New York state, the Frewsburg Central School Board of Education is awaiting an approved state budget before finalizing its 2022-23 school budget.

On March 10, the board held its second workshop meeting on the tentative budget during its regular monthly meeting. The board heard from Jerome Lee Yaw, district business manager, and Shelly O’Boyle, district superintendent, about salaries, fringe benefits, BOCES, special education and revenues. District officials presented to board members three different budget scenarios ranging from a proposed tax levy increase of 2% to 3.19%.

O’Boyle told The Post-Journal that the board has decided to present a budget to the taxpayers in the district that will have a tax levy increase of 2.7%, which is a 7.52% increase over the district’s current budget.

“At this point, the district is awaiting the state budget in order to finalize the 2022-23 budget,” O’Boyle said. “If the governor’s (Kathy Hochul) budget is approved by the state Legislature, the district will need to reduce its current budget draft by approximately $110,000.”

The state has an April 1 deadline to approve its 2022-23 budget.

In other business, the board heard a presentation about a structural integrity trip. O’Boyle said she presented the information on behalf of Jennifer Swanson, district structural integrity advisor.

Swanson requested approval from the board to pursue a parent/student interest meeting for the structural integrity students to participate in a week-long build program in Johns Island, S.C., during spring break 2023.

“This build program will be in coordination with the Habitat for Humanity and the Sea Island Habitat for Humanity group,” O’Boyle said. “The trip will allow students to work in a group to achieve a common goal and be engaged in various construction tasks. Students will be able to experience differences in their own country, and the experience will help to raise awareness and promote sensitivity.”

O’Boyle said, following the presentation, the board approved the trip.
