Delta Variant Creates Region, State Concern

New York state is keeping an eye on the Delta variant of COVID-19.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced over the weekend, regions are seeing an uptick in virus cases. In Western New York, the seven-day positivity rate is 3.17%, which is above the statewide average of 2.4%. Erie County reported 496 new cases within the last week as concerns of another virus surge are beginning to surface. In Chautauqua County, only 18 new cases have been reported in the last week.

“But our fight is not over, and we know this because the Delta variant continues to infect more and more people, particularly those who are still unvaccinated,” Cuomo said. “We cannot risk throwing away all of our hard-won progress, so I urge everyone who still needs their shot to get it right away and help protect themselves, their neighbors and their loved ones.”

Statewide, more than 12 million residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Chautauqua County reports 58,662 residents — or 46% — have received at least one dose, according to the county Health Department.
