MAYVILLE — The Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services and the village of Mayville announced Thursday that the water conservation order, in effect since June 2 for customers served by the village of Mayville water supply, is now lifted.

Water samples collected from a newly installed treatment system on Well No. 1 show that the system is effectively removing perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), the contaminant that forced the village to shut down the well in December 2020.

“Village water customers can be assured that the new treatment system installed on old Well #1 is filtering out all the PFNA in the water,” said Christine Schuyler, county public health director. “A battery of tests have been run on the treated water and they show it is completely safe to drink. The water will continue to be tested on a routine schedule.”

After the old wells were shut down in December, the village quickly brought on line new Well No. 4 located in a different aquifer that did not contain any PFNA. However, due to the spring drought and corresponding low water levels in the well, the village and county issued a water conservation order. Now that the village has two good wells and the water level in Well No. 4 has stabilized, the conservation order is lifted.

Construction of the PFNA filtration system was made possible through a grant from New York state. This grant provided the Village with necessary funds to construct the new treatment system, which cost nearly $1 million.

The Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services and Village of Mayville thanked all affected water customers for their cooperation and patience while the water conservation order was in effect.
