Mayville OKs Village Spending Plan

MAYVILLE — Village officials are giving local residents a slight break on their taxes.

On Tuesday, the Mayville Village Board approved its budget for the 2021-22 year. The approved budget for the general fund is $1,694,809, which is a slight increase from the current $1.64 million budget.

The new budget calls for a tax rate of $7.42 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. The current village tax rate is $7.55 per $1,000. The approved budget gives raises for different village employees. Most hourly employees received a 50 cent increase. There were no pay raises for elected officials. According to Mayor Kenneth Shearer the only major new purchase is a new plow truck for the highway department.

There were no comments made during the public hearing and all officials in attendance voted in favor of the budget. Trustee Sun Ray Eagle Harrington was not in attendance.

In other business:

¯ Trustee H. Tim Jacobson reported that the Fourth of July Committee is looking to have fireworks this summer and possibly five vendors, which would be much smaller than a normal year. A final decision about the parade has not been determined, although Jacobson said it’s unlikely.

¯ Shearer said he is attending weekly meetings about Mayville’s water problems. The village only has one well right now after three wells were taken off due to contaminants discovered late last year. The village is still using a used water pump on the well, but is hopeful that when the new pump arrives and is installed it will be able to provide enough water for the summer, when water use increases. The board is also looking at testing wells at the current Chautauqua Lake school to see if they would be able to be used to supplement their water usage.

¯ The board has not made a determination if they will hold a recreation program for this summer or if they will hire lifeguards for the beach at Lakeside Park. They acknowledged that a decision needs to be made soon. Last year the beach did not open and the recreation program was canceled due to COVID.

¯ Shearer said Chautauqua Pops is seeking approval for permits from the state in order to operate this summer. As far as he knows, they have not received approval yet.

¯ The village board will hold a special meeting on Thursday, April 22, at 4 p.m. at the old gym located in the Chautauqua Town Hall. Nate Aldrich will be in attendance to discuss waterfront development and the board will also vote on the State Environmental Quality Review to become the lead agency on the proposed village water project.
