BROCTON — Serious injuries were reported in a single-vehicle crash Monday afternoon.

The Chautauqua County 911 dispatch center received a complaint for an erratic driver allegedly operating at an “extremely high rate of speed” on Route 5 near the town of Portland. Capt. Eric Balon of the New York State Police said multiple agencies were being observant for the vehicle — a 2021 Audi — when troopers were informed of a nearby crash on North Swede Road, near Martin Road.

The Audi was found to have struck a utility pole after leaving the road; the driver — identified as a 21-year-old from Erie County — was reportedly ejected from the vehicle, Balon said.

Volunteer firefighters from Portland and Brocton responded to the scene, as did Alstar EMS. The driver was transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo for treatment of serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
