Westfield To Go Remote After COVID Case ID’d

The superintendent of the Westfield Academy and Central School District announced schools will go to remote learning for two days for precautionary measures after a second positive COVID-19 case was identified.

Michael Cipolla said the individual, who was not identified as a student, teacher or staff, was reportedly last present within the middle school Oct. 27 and is being considered an off-site positive case because they were not believed to be present at the school when they were infectious.

In a statement released Wednesday, school officials said:

“Our District is working directly with the Chautauqua County Department of Health (DOH) to evaluate the situation and identify potential contacts. The affected individual has been isolated under the guidance of the DOH. All individuals that may have been directly involved will be notified by the District and DOH directly.

“We are taking all recommended steps to ensure the safety of our students and staff.”

Those steps include cleaning and sanitizing the areas used by the individual as well as going remote today and Friday.

“Please continue to monitor your child for symptoms and have them stay home if they are sick. In addition, please contact your child’s healthcare provider if they develop symptoms or if you have any additional questions or concerns.”

According to the state’s COVID-19 school report card, Westfield’s first positive COVID case included an on-site teacher or staff at the middle school. New cases reported in the afternoon appear on the report card the following day.
