There were a handful of contested local races Tuesday in Chautauqua County. These results do not include absentee ballots.

COUNTY LEGISLATURE

The Republican Party won the two county legislator seats that were up for election Tuesday night.

In Dunkirk, Kevin Muldowney defeated challenger Phillip A. Collier for District 1. Unofficially, Muldowney received 569 votes while Collier received 449 votes. Muldowney has been the county legislative representative for the last five years, however he resigned on Feb. 28 and was reappointed to the seat on March 25. He resigned because he was retiring from his position with the state senate, where he worked for 32 years. He also had stepped down at the Pomfret assessor. “In order to retire, I also had to have a break in service from the legislature and from my town job,” Muldowney said in late March.

In Jamestown, Kenneth J. Lawton defeated Zachary B. Agett for the District 10 seat. Unofficially, Lawton received 968 votes, while Agett received 691 votes. Lawton had served as the representative for the seat, which was previously held by PJ Wendel, who stepped down when he was appointed as interim county executive.

Republicans will continue to hold a supermajority control of the legislature, 14-5, over the Democrats.

FREDONIA

It appears John Sedota defeated EvaDawn Bashaw for the village trustee seat. On Tuesday, unofficial results show Sedota with 1,374 to 1,224 for Bashaw. Bashaw ran on the Democratic and Working Families lines, while Sedota ran on the Republican line.

BROCTON

It appears Craig Miller and Mark Belcher were elected village trustees. Along with Miller and Belcher, Carol Horlacher were running for two open seats.

On Tuesday, unofficial results show 414 votes for Miller, 312 votes for Belcher and 185 votes for Horlacher. Horlacher was backed by the Democratic Party, Belcher was backed by the Republican Party and Miller was backed by both parties.

There were 20 other uncontested races in various Chautauqua County villages and towns.

As of Tuesday, the county has received 9,955 of the 11,926 absentee ballots that were applied for. Of that number, 4,828 are registered Democrats, 2,657 are registered Republicans and 1,722 are not affiliated with a party.

Absentee and affidavit ballots will be counted starting at 9 a.m. Nov. 10. Additional overseas federal and military absentees have until 13 days after the election to arrive at the Board of Elections.
