An unattended coffee maker that overheated reportedly sparked a fire that displaced two Jamestown residents Sunday evening.

Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Coon said investigators believe the appliance was accidentally left on when it caught fire and spread on the second floor of a Barrett Avenue home in the 200 block. Members of the city fire department’s third platoon were summoned to the blaze shortly after 6 p.m.

The fire was under control in about 15 minutes and fully extinguished in a half hour.

Coon said the property’s two occupants were not home when the fire broke out; three pet parrots did perish.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the two occupants. Coon said the property is not currently habitable.

City firefighters were assisted Sunday by the Jamestown Police Department, Alstar EMS and the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities.
