When you think of the Chautauqua County Humane Society you think of animal adoptions.

In 2019, over 1,100 animals found their forever homes through the adoption services of CCHS. Have you ever considered the behind the scenes work that goes into preparing that animal for adoption?

It’s Valentine’s Day and there is a 3-year-old dog named Cedar hanging out in the community room here at CCHS. She is looking sharp in her heart covered sweater. Cedar came in as a stray on Dec. 27, 2019, from the town of Ellicott. During the intake process, Cedar was checked out by CCHS veterinary technician Molly Loomis for any health issues that would need attention.

Next up is behavior.

Danny Reynolds leads the behavior team at CCHS. This team plays a major role in getting Cedar home. Not only is behavior responsible along with the CCHS animal care team for the daily care of Cedar, but Reynolds and Katelyn Vanderhoof work to learn what kind of home Cedar will be a good fit. They find the answer to questions like: is Cedar friendly to cats? Does she like other dogs? How would she handle a household with young children?

These questions are crucial when it comes to attracting the attention of the proper adoptive family.

In Cedar’s case she may chase a cat. So if you have a cat that is dog savvy there wouldn’t be as much of an issue. When it comes to people, Cedar loves pretty much everyone.
