A winter storm watch was issued for the southern portion of Western New York.

The watch, issued Friday afternoon by the National Weather Service in Buffalo, is in effect from late Saturday night through early Monday morning for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Wyoming and southern Erie counties. A winter weather advisory also remains in effect from 6 a.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday.

For the advisory, the weather service said certain areas could see between 2 and 4 inches of snow from Saturday morning through Saturday evening. For the watch, total snow accumulation could reach 7 to 14 inches between late Saturday and early Monday.

In addition, winds could gust as high as 50 mph Saturday night, “producing blowing and drifting snow,” the weather service said.

“Travel could be very difficult with poor visibility and deep snow-cover on roads. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches and result in isolated power outages.

“Periods of snow will result in snow covered roads and limited visibilities. Slow down and use caution while driving.”
