A scheduled Chautauqua County Democratic Committee meeting for tonight, which was expected to be possibly become heated, has been put on ice for the time being.

Norman Green, county Democratic Committee chair, said Wednesday afternoon the meeting was canceled. “It’s not unusual for us to cancel meetings,” Green said, noting the committee normally meets on a monthly basis.

Some of the topics on the agenda included discussing potential candidates for the state Assembly, Senate as well as Chautauqua County executive. Additionally, the committee seemed poised to endorse Tracy Mitrano for U.S Representative for District 23.

Also on the docket, and likely the most controversial item, was the removal of the county first vice chair and city vice chair “for acts of disloyalty to the Chautauqua County Democratic Committee.”

Currently holding those positions are Don Williams Jr., councilman representing the First Ward in the city of Dunkirk. Williams had been accused of working against the party in the city during the November election for mayor, which was won by Wilfred Rosas by about 60 votes.

Williams, when reached by phone on Wednesday, believes that item will be removed from the agenda in the future. “I have a lot of support out there,” he said. “I have always been loyal to the county Democratic party and the city committee.”

Since re-election, however, Williams has sided with the Republicans in terms of approving the dismissal of three employees on Jan. 7 at the first Common Council meeting in a 4-1 vote. Those staff include: David Campola, human resources director; Vicki Westling, executive assistant to the mayor; and Richard Morrisroe, city attorney.

Green kept the conversation short and said the committee will be scheduling another meeting in the near future.
