LAKEWOOD — The Happy Hounds Hotel and Day Spa is expanding its business.

The Lakewood Village Zoning Board of Appeals recently approved the business’ plan to add 2,342 square feet to the back side of the building at 333 E. Fairmount Ave., Lakewood, and another smaller addition on the northeast corner of the building.

The business plans to expand its day care facility and add a dog training area. The Zoning Board of Appeals needed to approve two rear yard set-back variances because the addition will be closer to neighboring properties than the 30 feet required in the village zoning laws.

According to minutes of the board’s Dec. 12 meeting, Lee Lodestro, who owns the building along with his wife, told Zoning Board of Appeals members that eight Happy Hounds Hotel staff members are enrolled in an animal behavioral program to become professional dog trainers while the manager of the Happy Hounds Hotel is certified to teach CPR and first aid for dogs. Lodestro also said the business is handling more large dogs, which takes more space to train and house than previously anticipated.

Lou Drago, Zoning Board of Appeals member, asked Lodestro if there had been test borings of the site to make sure there were no environmental issues from when the property was the Goodyear Tire and Auto Service Center.

Lodestro said he didn’t know if there were test borings done, but that any underground fuel or used oil tanks had been properly removed before the Happy Hounds Hotel and Day Spa opened.
