The possible sale of a small piece of city land is one step closer for the marina project happening along Fluvanna Avenue.

On Tuesday, the Jamestown Planning Commission recommended the sale of the 66-foot wide former railroad right-of-way to the developers of the Lawson Boat & Motor marina project. No one representing the project attended the meeting to speak about the project.

Crystal Surdyk, city principal planner, said the assessor’s office appraised the land for $5,500, which is how much the parcel will be sold for if approved by the Jamestown City Council.

The commission members and staff had a short discussion about the project. Surdyk said the project developers have been active in the area around the proposed site, which is along the border of both the city of Jamestown and the town of Ellicott.

In March, the Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency discussed the Lawson Boat & Motor marina project during a regular meeting.

At the time, Mark Geise, deputy Chautauqua County executive for economic development, told The Post-Journal the $1.7 million project is entering its second phase, which included the construction of a new building, renovating already existing buildings and demolishing a dilapidated building.

“This is going to be a boost for tourism by improving this dilapidated area to take advantage of the Chadakoin River,” he said. “It’s also creating new jobs. Approximately nine full-time jobs that will be seasonal.”

Geise said the marina will be connected to the city’s Greater Jamestown Riverwalk Chadakoin Park Trail and Bike Path that opened during the summer of 2018. The IDA board has approved a mortgage record and sales tax exemption along with a 15-year tourism destination payment in lieu of taxes agreement.

During its February meeting, the IDA board approved the PILOT, mortgage recording and sales tax exemption. The estimated total tax savings is estimated to be $315,435.
