Fall Craft Fair Helps Spread Word About Library

FINDLEY LAKE — After more than 20 years, the Findley Lake Fall Craft Fair does much more than provide a day of handmade goods, food and good friends.

“I definitely think it helps the library get the word out about their services,” said co-organizer Kelly McDonald. “Community events like these are only one of the things the library does.”

McDonald said she often encounters people from the area who are not aware that Findley Lake has a library, and the craft fair help them learn about it and the services it provides.

The Alexander Findley Library’s annual Fall Craft Fair will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the fire hall on Main Street.

Some people come to the craft fair every year to renew old acquaintances, McDonald said. “We have people who come year after year to meet with friends and have lunch,” she said.

However, the constant infusion of new vendors brings a lot of first time visitors as well.

“Getting new vendors brings in new people who then come to know about Findley Lake and everything we have to offer,” she said.

This year’s craft fair features 25 vendors and incorporates 36 tables, said Melissa Froah, co-organizer and library director.

The wares being offered range from pottery to crocheted items to jewelry. One vendor will be selling hand-woven baskets and giving a demonstration of chair caning.

“We have a few new vendors that have never sold anything at a craft fair,” Froah said. “We are always hopeful that everyone likes the food and finds something to purchase.

Of course, there will also be the chance auction, McDonald said. Each vendor donates a prize and all of the proceeds go to support the library.

This year’s event features a return to the craft fair’s traditional fall menu, which includes “sloppy joes, soup, delicious homemade pies, as well as other dessert items,” McDonald said. Froah noted that everything except the soda is homemade and the desserts are donated by library patrons.

Even though the craft fair has been an annual event in Findley Lake for more than 20 years, it hasn’t diminished in popularity. According to Froah, this year, all of the tables were sold out by late August.

Not only does the craft fair continue to be successful, but the volunteers who make it happen remain enthusiastic.

“We have long-time board members who love putting together events like this,” she said, noting the craft fair is one of many things the library does. “We have craft classes, community dinners, and we offer many programs, which are free of charge.”
