The news/entertainment/lifestyles editor for The Post-Journal recently took first place in arts/entertainment writing category in the New York State Associated Press Association’s annual contest.

Michael Zabrodsky received the award for his July 26, 2018, feature “It’s About Compromise,” a profile on The Gin Blossoms for their then-upcoming performance at Chautauqua Institution.

Zabrodsky’s award was his first from the Associated Press, which held its ceremony in Saratoga Springs.

“I love writing,” Zabrodsky said. “I love entertainment news and I always have. When I was younger, I used to read the backs of album covers to find out as much information about the band or artists as I could. And that’s the key to good entertainment reporting — one has to do his homework and research the band or artist that he will be interviewing.”

The Jamestown native returned to the newspaper in 2018 after living in Las Vegas. He previously covered a variety of writing beats, including entertainment and features.

“This first-place award from the Associated Press given to Michael Zabrodsky only solidifies what I have already known about Michael,” said Publisher Mike Bird, “that being that he is a very talented writer and this award is well deserved.”

“There have been many other stories he has written that surely would also have garnered awards throughout his time at The Post-Journal and I am sure the community sees that in every article Michael writes,” Bird continued. “Michael is not only a talented writer, but also a great mentor for our young staff members in our newsroom. I am proud of Michael for his accomplishment.”

Zabrodsky said Jamestown is undergoing an “artistic renaissance,” which provides him with plenty of topics to cover in the newspaper.

“What makes my job fun is being able to relate the information that I have gathered to The Post-Journal readers,” he said, later adding, “There are a lot of events happenings that I am fortunate to be able to document in this great city.”
