Several Vets Day Activities Planned

Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans and in Chautauqua County there will be several activities planned this weekend in their honor throughout Chautauqua County.

The Jamestown Vietnam Veterans Association will be holdings its 9th Annual Veteran’s Day Bash starting at noon. It will be held at the clubroom, located at 41 Bigelow Ave. The event is $5 per person and children under 10 are allowed in for free. There will be music by J.B. Martin and Smoking Dog and Backtrax. There will also be food, raffles and a 50/50 drawing.

At 5 p.m. Saturday, the United Veterans Council of Jamestown will be hosting a chicken and biscuit dinner at the St. Susan Center, located at 31 Water St. There will be a basket raffle, bake sale and 50/50 drawing. All proceeds will go toward purchasing U.S. veteran grave markers to hold American flags for local cemeteries.

The Jamestown Rebels are offering free admission for veterans and first responders to their Saturday game that starts at 7 p.m. at Northwest Arena, located at 319 W. Third St.

The first ceremony Sunday on Veterans Day will start at 10 a.m. with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 53 gathering at Veterans Memorial Park, located along Logan Avenue and Third Street.

Following the service at the park, at 11 a.m. the American Legion will host a 21-gun salute at the corner of Third and Main streets. The Jamestown High School Marching Band, led by Meghan Murray, will also play “The Star Spangled Banner” and buglers will play “Taps.”

Shortly following the service at the corner of Third and North Main streets, there will be a ceremony held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, located at 410 N. Main St. Following the church service around noon, there will be a ceremony at Soldier’s Circle at Lake View Cemetery.

The Blue Star Mothers of America Lake Erie-New York Chapter 4 will be holding their second annual Blue Wing Fest from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the Lakewood Rod and Gun, located at 433 E. Terrace Ave., Lakewood. Tickets are available at the door for $10. There will be 12 different kinds of wings to choose from, basket raffles, music and the football game. All proceeds will help send care packages to troops overseas. During the Blue Wing Fest, people can bring items to donate toward the Christmas care packages for deployed troops.

At 11 a.m., there will be a Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council event at Applebee’s, located at 3908 Vineyard Drive in Dunkirk.

The Westfield Exempt Volunteer Firemen’s Association ceremony for Korean War veterans will be held at 11 a.m. at the Clinton St. Fire Hall.

Monday at noon there will be a special edition of Jay Talk at Jamestown Community College. A panel of student veterans will be answering questions for about an hour at the Hamilton Collegiate Center Student Union. Prior to the discussion, there will be a presentation of the National Anthem at the base of the flag pole near the pond in the middle of campus, said Melissa Stormer, JCC veterans coordinator.

At 2 p.m. Monday there will be a Veterans program at 2 p.m. at Heritage Green Health Care Center, located at 3023 Route 430, Greenhurst.
