Five more instructional personnel positions were approved at a Jamestown Public Schools Board of Education regular meeting.

Tuesday’s meeting, fell in line with the Aug. 7 meeting when 17 new hires were approved by the district with many of them in attendance.

“This is a very special day for our Jamestown school family,” said Bret Apthorpe, superintendent of Jamestown Public Schools, during the Aug. 7 meeting.

Tuesday, the newest five members approved to a probationary position included Kevin Emley, physical education teacher at Fletcher Elementary School; Brianna Rodriguez, teacher at Love Elementary School; Desaree Hannon, ELA teacher; Heather Heald, special education teacher at Persell Middle School; and Jamie Berg, coordinator of humanities.

During Apthorpe’s superintendent’s report, he called attention to the JPS Promise Fund that is holding a music program drive on Sept. 8 at Jamestown High School. The drive is accepting musical instrument or financial donations to help support the district’s music program. Apthorpe will additionally be traveling to Chautauqua Institution to accept donations from residents there on prior to the official drive.

“The people in the institution have been kind enough to promote this drive,” he said.

Apthorpe also called attention the district’s website that received a recent overhaul. Apthorpe thanked Chuck Marzec, director of information services, Jessie Joy, chief information officer, and Cathy Panebianco, communications coordinator who were responsible for the update. Apthorpe described the newly updated website as having a “21st century look.”

“The premise is that any parent of any school can look at their school’s website and see exactly what they need to know for the start of school,” he said regarding the district’s website accessibility. “It sure has a great fresh feel to it.”

The superintendent also looked forward to the district’s opening day of school on Sept. 4 and invited the board members to attend. The first day of school will welcome Judge Andra Ackerman as a guest speaker at Jamestown High School who Apthorpe cited as having conducted extensive work with teenagers and related programs.
