Sherman Women Rescued From Chautauqua Lake

CHAUTAUQUA — No injuries were reported after two kayakers were helped by water rescue teams in Chautauqua Lake on Tuesday.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said it received a 911 call around 3 p.m. in the area of Magnolia Road in the town of Chautauqua for reports of screaming coming from the lake. Deputies, along with police from Chautauqua Institution, observed an overturned kayak in the area of Prendergast Point with a woman in the water.

Bemus Point firefighters were able to reach the woman, who was hanging onto a second kayak with another woman inside. Both kayakers were guided to the shore by first responders.

The women were identified as 20-year-old Bridget Yaw and 20-year-old Roxanne Toy, both of Sherman. The Sheriff’s Office didn’t specify in a press release which of the pair was found in the water and which was in the second kayak.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

“The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens that the water is still cold, and we recommend the use of life jackets on all vessels, including paddle craft,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Deputies were assisted by the county Water Rescue Team and firefighters from Bemus Point and Dewittville.
