Body Found In River ID’d As Missing City Man

The Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the body pulled from the Chadakoin River on Tuesday in Jamestown was that of 35-year-old Sean Carpenter, who had been reported missing since April 11.

Jamestown police confirmed the identification less than three days after a passerby found the body in the river not far from Harrison Street around 1:40 p.m. and called police. Divers recovered the body, which was transported to the Erie County Medical Center for an autopsy.

No cause of death has been determined, Capt. Robert Samuelson of the Jamestown Police Department said in a press release. He said the cause will be released to the public when it becomes known.

“From a police standpoint we’re glad that this could come to a conclusion for the family,” Samuelson said earlier this week. “But for us this investigation is still continuing to figure out how he got to where he was. We still have a bunch of questions that need to be answered.”

Carpenter was last seen walking toward his Superior Street home in Jamestown around 1:45 a.m. on April 11. His last known location was in the area of Pine and First streets, police said at the time.

Several citywide searches were conducted after his disappearance.
