Truck Carrying Hazardous Materials Catches Fire On I-90

SHERIDAN — A tractor-trailer containing hazard materials caught fire Thursday morning, forcing the closure of a lane on Interstate 90 in the town of Sheridan.

The fire occurred shortly after 10 a.m. on the westbound side of the interstate between exits 58 and 59. According to Capt. Eric Balon of the New York State Police, the truck was hauling 42,800 pounds of sodium silicate when the fire occurred.

Sodium silicate, also known as “water glass” or “liquid glass,” has wide industrial and commercial uses.

Area firefighters and county HAZMAT crews were called to the interstate. Troopers with the New York State Police and Thruway Traffic Safety personnel also responded.

No injuries were reported, state police said. No cause of the fire has been determined.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation was notified of the incident.
