Two Southwestern High School freshman girls are preparing to have the time of their lives tonight when they attend the school’s homecoming dance with their dates.

Abby Adam and Sami Henry, best friends who both have Down syndrome, will participate in their first homecoming dance as guests of their longtime friends James and Chris Butler.

James and Chris are twin brothers and high school seniors who have been friends with Abby and Sami for some time. Their mother, Kimberly Butler, is a special education teacher and has worked with Abby and Sami for a few years.

According to Amy Adam, Abby’s mother, James and Chris have been very involved in the girls’ lives in the past. She said Chris specifically is anticipating going to this year’s homecoming dance more than any other.

“We’re so touched by this,” Amy said. “The girls, and their families and friends, are beyond grateful for this selfless act. Needless to say we were all, as parents, in tears. (Kimberly) had one of the proudest mom moments of her life, as you can only imagine. She said of all the successes her boys have had on the stage, field and academically, this is her proudest moment.”

Chris said he is looking forward to this year’s dance, adding that he’s most excited to be able to participate in his final homecoming with his friends by his side.

“I’ve always dreaded going to school dances such as homecoming and prom because they’re just not my scene, but I could never pass up a night out with my friends,” Chris said. “Abby and Sami are some of the most compassionate and fun girls I know, and I’ve always enjoyed their company.”

“The idea came to me while I was sitting in my car with my mom to ask them to homecoming, and my mom was very supportive of the idea,” he continued. “Abby and Sami have always had a special place in my life, and I’m very excited to accompany these young ladies to homecoming.”

Chris said the party will consist of the girls, himself, James and James’ girlfriend, Bethany Stravato.

“I’ve never thought of this as too big of a deal, just me bringing some of my closest friends to homecoming so we can have a nice night together. I’m glad that it has had such a profound effect, and am looking forward to tonight,” he said.
