LAKEWOOD — Efforts were ongoing to upright a large crane truck that toppled in the village Wednesday.

Crews with a local towing company were on Pine Avenue in Lakewood to get the crane truck back on its wheels. It’s not clear how the truck, operated by a tree service company, ended up on its side about 30 feet from the Chautauqua Lake shoreline.

“He wasn’t sure what happened,” Steve Smouse, first assistant fire chief in Lakewood, said of the truck operator. “He’s been using it for a number of years and never had a problem.”

Smouse said someone walked into the fire station around 5:30 p.m. to report a crane had overturned. He said fuel and hydraulic fluids leaked from the truck, prompting a request for the county’s HAZMAT Team.

Lakewood firefighters helped contain the leaks, and most crews were cleared from the scene by about 8 p.m. Officers with the Lakewood-Busti Police Department also responded to Pine Avenue on Wednesday.

Smouse said the operator was “bumped around a little bit” when the truck toppled, but otherwise was not injured.
