NTSB To Send Investigator To Scene Of Plane Crash

The National Transportation Safety Board said it is sending an air safety investigator to the scene of a single-engine plane crash that killed one person and seriously injured another Wednesday afternoon in Cattaraugus County.

The NTSB in a message posted to Twitter said the member would arrive today in Great Valley to “begin the on-scene phase of the investigation.”

According to the Olean Times Herald, the Cessna 177 crashed shortly after taking off around 2 p.m. from the Great Valley Airport, located north of Salamanca.

A witness told the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office that the plane appeared to have struggled upon taking off from the private air port.

“He could see the plane in the air and the wings kind of tilt slightly,” Capt. Ronald Lott told the Times Herald. “He looked in the sky and did not see the plane actually in the air, and a few seconds later he saw black smoke.”

One person was pronounced dead while another man, believed to be the pilot, was transported to a Buffalo hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
