A DNA test between the daughter of a missing Montreal woman and Chautauqua County’s 1983 Jane Doe homicide victim came back negative, a statement on the Facebook page dedicated to identifying the woman noted Monday.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office has renewed efforts to identify Jane, who was found dead Dec. 6, 1983, along old Route 17 in the town of Ellery.

The Facebook page, along with recent media reports, has resulted in new tips and suggestions regarding the cold case.

In the statement Monday, the Sheriff’s Office said it had been following up on a possible match to Jane — a woman reported missing in Montreal in October 1981. Unfortunately, a DNA sample taken from the daughter of the missing woman — identified as Erzebeth Szita — did not match.

“The next step is working further with the FBI and submitting Jane Doe’s DNA into the genealogy companies that they work with,” the statement on the Facebook page read. “This will be a long process but we had to eliminate our current leads before going to this next step.

“The Sheriff’s office is very much appreciative of all of the tips and suggestions and we are following up on them all. We are determined to get Jane Doe identified.”
