High-Speed Chase With Teens In Stolen Vehicle Halted in Westfield

A high speed-chase that began in the town of Hanover ended early this morning in Westfield after the driver of a stolen car and five other youth were finally slowed down by spike strips on Route 5.

Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies report they observed a vehicle speeding on Routes 5 and 20 in the Town of Hanover around 2:40 a.m. The sheriff’s car attempted to stop the vehicle for the traffic violation when the vehicle sped off, heading west. The registration tag on the vehicle was checked and it was learned the vehicle was stolen out of Harrisburg, Pa.

The suspect vehicle continued west to Route 5, still refusing to pull over. The sheriff’s car continued to try and stop the vehicle through the towns of Hanover, village of Silver Creek, town of Sheridan, city of Dunkirk, the towns of Dunkirk, Pomfret, Portland and into Westfield.

Sheriff’s Officers deployed spike strips in the Town of Westfield, which flattened the front tires on the vehicle causing the vehicle to come to a stop. Upon approaching the vehicle it was found the auto had six younger teenagers inside.

All the teenagers were brought into the Sheriff’s Office in Mayville where their family members were contacted. The adolescent offender driving the vehicle was charged with third-degree possession of stolen property and will be in The Chautauqua County youth court later in the month.

One of the teenagers was reported as a runaway from Pittsburgh and was turned over to the custody of The Child Protection Services in Pennsylvania. All others were not charged and released to family members.

No injuries or crashes occurred in the incident. The owner of the vehicle was contacted and will be picking up his vehicle later this month.
